Here’s what I’m promoting today. This crescent moon has been shared before and will be shared again, I’m sure. What’s the secret behind his smile?

Crescent Moon, Mosaic Wall Art, Stained Glass, Recycled Mirror, Blue, Silver, Pink, Wall Decor, Price: $176.82

Measures 15 x 14 inches

Mr M has a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. There are three stars inside the moon and around the face for even more sparkle. Placed in a sunny spot this will shine brightly. When near artificial light it makes the iridescent glass I put in this really come to life.

As a child born in the 50′s, I always enjoy creating mosaics that have a bit of nostalgia of the 70′s to it. This is one of those pieces.

Grouted in charcoal and then painted using a metallic silver acrylic giving it even more sparkle. Sealed and signed. A sturdy D-ring is attached to the back for sturdy hanging along with a felt foot at the base to protects walls.

Created on MDF (medium density fiberboard) this is not for outdoor use.

This would look great in a bedroom, enclosed porch or anywhere there is sun shining through the room to capture the large amount of recycled mirror I cut up and placed in it.  Could be placed in a nursery, hall, bedroom; any room gets a face lift with a mosaic in it.

Shipping fees include shipping, insurance and handling to the US only. Please convo me for international shipping quotes.

In the Studio

It’s not crazy-busy this week in the studio. I like the slow pace so much better. Mosaics should always be done with a Zen approach. I enjoy creating when I do them in this way. It makes the experience, for me, a calming one. I like that a lot.

I’m working on the bowl I handmade this week. It’s coming along fairly well. There’s only one section left to cover in glass and then it can sit for a bit. It’s rainy again today, but I managed to get a few photos to share of it’s progress. As always, many photos of this work-in-progress can be found on my flickr photostream.

Placement of glass/mirror is often done using tweezers.

This section is what is left to work on.

I have 3 different choices for grout colorants in mind. Until I can “land” on one, this will sit and wait patiently for my decision. I am pleased that it’s coming out as well as it is, although the placement of the glass is a bit wonky in spots. Between lack of dexterity, the tiny pieces and all the ridges and waves on this piece, I allowed myself to relax about how that part of it is going. Always too critical at first with whatever it is that I’m doing, I learn to love it in spite of and sometimes because of it’s flaws eventually. I reminded myself recently that it started as a piece of flat wire mesh and a vision of a bowl with a dramatic shape. I think I have accomplished that.

I found some gypsum board “curb side” this week. 3 good sized pieces but small enough for me to carry and place in my car. These will get cut down and used for mosaic creations yet to be designed. I think I’ll try to make an outdoor piece with one of them. Maybe a “Welcome” sign. I was thrilled to find them! It’s always fun to find items that were considered useless and use them in some form of art. Exciting stuff in my world!

Now that the family obligations are behind me, I’m free to work on what I feel like working on again. I’m happy about that. I will allow the muse to decide what to do next!

The customer who purchased the peace sign a few weeks ago sent me a photo of it in it’s new home. It looks like it was made for this space!

Doesn’t it look great among the other piece of art he already had on the wall?!!

In the Studio

It’s a quiet week. I’ve been recouping from my daughter’s wedding and enjoying the fact that the deadlines all have been met. The centerpieces for their tables looked great.

I also brought some extra mosaics for them to use as decorations if they needed it. We placed this one mosaic shown below on the table that held their place cards and guest book which wasn’t a book at all but a framed piece with many small hearts in it. The guests signed the hearts. What a great idea! Unfortunately, I didn’t get a photo of it sitting on the table.

As far as the studio goes this week, I gave myself the week off. I do have the bowl waiting for me to continue working on when I’m ready. I haven’t added anything to it since I shared photos last week. But it’s patiently waiting for me when I feel pulled towards the work table again.

I’ve recently ordered some new MDF shapes from a favorite shop on Etsy. http://www.etsy.com/shop/damboisedesigns These folks have some of the best shapes! Their MDF is thick enough to mosaic on but mostly they appeal to those who do paper crafts. I prime them well before I mosaic on them and they are good to go! This shop is where I got the small peace signs (hand painted 5 of them, 5 more will get a mosaic treatment on them eventually), the tea pot and rocking horse I’ve shared photos of in the past and will again today. The first two are listed, the last was a gift. I have more that are packed away some where (a cool looking owl and a coffee cup I put dish tiles on are floating around either in storage or at my Dad’s house).

I’m looking forward to getting the new shapes. I have picked ones I don’t already have. They will be a nice addition to the items I’ve got made so far. It may take some time to get the new things made and listed, but that is the plan.

Meanwhile, I’m renewing my listings on Etsy and sharing them with my teammates each day. It is one of the best ways for me to promote my shop on Etsy, I have found. It takes very little time to do and almost always many new folks find me daily and add an item or two to their favorites. Additionally, I spend some time looking at others’ items and doing the same a few days a week. We all share the love and it’s a wonderful thing!

And that’s about it for this week. I’m staring at the vase I set aside to do Christmas colors on as I write this. That means once the bowl is set aside ready for grout, I can start on that next! At this rate, I’ll only have a few holiday items ready during holiday time, but I’ll have some and that was the goal! Yay!

In the Studio

It’s been a slightly more productive week here in the studio.

I wrote a post on the other blog yesterday. I don’t write in it very often, but when I do, I share some personal insights and inspirational thoughts about my life. If you want to see what that’s all about you can find it here: http://theviewfromearth-earthmothermosaics.blogspot.com/ I explain in this one a little about what to expect here in this blog in the future. It could be worth a glance to those who are curious about that.

Studio time has been limited but going well. I worked on the bowl for a bit and got some photos of the progress. I really love the process of how this was made and will have to experiment more with different shapes to see what I can come up with next.

The folds and ripples are challenging but so far I’m working around them. Adding glue to the thin set has given it more of a grip on those areas. I don’t really measure how much or what ratio I use but thin set, white glue (a PVC like Weldbond) and water mixed together make a great combo to hold pieces in place if you’re working on a surface that has waves, ripples, etc. It’s great for any 3-D project using thin set. I have one more color to add to the bowl (iridescent brown) but I think I’ll add another bit of yellow and gold towards the top but it may be just a line here and there and not completely going around the bowl. This is a fun project and taking my time with it is exactly the way I should go with it. It’s messy looking but once grouted and shined up, it’s going to look pretty good. I’m not sure if I’ll gift it, sell it or keep it but whatever I decide to do with it, it’s been an excellent journey. From dreaming about it for a year to actually seeing it completed will be my reward in and of itself.

The trays for the wedding this Saturday are more than half complete. I have 2 more to glue mirror on. 2 are sitting waiting for grout and the paint treatment. I hope to grout those today. I’m going to seal these 4 shown below today.

Some have a lot of mirror on them, some have less. I am fairly sure once in place on the tables with their vases filled with flowers and lights on them they will all look really spectacular. Nothing will outshine the bride, however. I’m so proud of my daughter and soon to be son-in-law. I’m one happy Mother of the Bride!

I made a sale this week! The newest peace sign I added to Etsy recently with it’s awesome vintage purple flower dishes will be headed to it’s new home very soon.

I’ll be creating more things to put into the shop very soon as I’m stepping away from promoting others’ shops at the moment. Again, I’d like to refer to the other blog and it’s recent post for more of an explanation on that.

I definitely have the materials and all the supplies I need to be as creative as I care to be. That is so nice for me to say! Even with limitations, I have all I need. It is absolutely true that if you really want to be creative, no matter your circumstance, you will find a way! I’m living it!!

I certainly haven’t done it on my own. So many friends and family members have contributed to my room filled with things to create mosaics out of. It’s humbling to realize how fortunate I truly am. I’m grateful for it all. I’m one lucky lady!!

In the Studio

Another fairly quiet week around here. If you follow my posts you may have deduced that I haven’t done as many recently. Or you may not have missed them at all which is fine with me. For those who have enjoyed Virtual Shopping days, take heart. Virtual shopping hasn’t stopped completely but due to computer glitches/minor internet connection woes and life in general, I’ve stopped for now. Until things calm down a bit, I really want to spend the hours it takes to find the perfect items for my treasuries doing other things away from the computer.

I love to promote not just my own mosaics but items I find by others. One of my greatest joys is sharing a particular piece of art, upcycled item, vintage piece, jewelry creation or home decorative accent I come across during the cruising I do on Etsy. Just because I’m not doing the treasuries at the moment, doesn’t mean I don’t do a little virtual shopping. It’s just done on a smaller scale at the moment. I still find an item or two to share on Pinterest. If you have an account, you can find me at http://pinterest.com/earthmothermos/ where I share a few new things I come across under the boards named “Etsy Goodness”, “For the Home” and “My Style”. In using Pinterest, I’ve still managed to share a few things I find and love and don’t have to spend a lot of time at the computer when my time is limited or our technology here in our home has the hiccups. In other words, I’m still sharing, just in a different way. I miss making treasuries and will be doing them again soon on a regular basis like I did before when the time dedicated to doing them is available once more.

I’m also doing a daily pick on tumblr using a theme each week. This week is grey and yellow. They are neutral colors for me and blend well with a lot of different styles of decor. I LOVE versatile decorating ideas!

One of those things I’m concentrating on right now away from the computer is the serving trays for my daughter’s wedding in 10 days! It is also my other daughter’s 27th birthday on the same day. I have a lot to be grateful for and celebrate about this year. And more gifts to make!! Yay!!

I haven’t been too successful in getting a decent photo of the trays yet but I did take one of a finished tray yesterday that gives you all an idea of what they look like. Mirror is hard to photograph but I have the hang of it and try to capture what the eye sees. That reddish blotch in the center is a sun catcher in my window. All of the mosaic is in mirror.

My daughter’s colors are purple and grey. These trays are plastic with a silver painted finish. I used recycled silver mirror, nipping and slicing them into triangles and grouted in white. Once the grout was dry, I used a full strength acrylic purple craft paint, painting the grout and wiping it off before it dried. This is an easy technique to get just the right color you’re looking for. If you aren’t sure what color you want, I suggest watering down the paint and getting a light coat on a small patch of grout. If you don’t like it, it is easier to paint over with a new color. Full saturated color, like I have used above, is harder to change but not impossible.

I showed my daughter the first two trays I made last week and got her okay to continue on. I wasn’t all that thrilled with them because the grout didn’t stick around the outer edge of the circle like I expected it to because it’s plastic and not wood, MDF or glass. It grabbed the mirror just fine and went around it like it was supposed to, but didn’t look all that great to me. The photo above is the first one I made and one of the ones I showed her before adding the paint to it. I tried adding white glue to some grout and put it around the area but it just wouldn’t stick and started getting me angry which is just plain silly. She said it didn’t matter that much to her if they were “perfect” and I agree but felt that old pressure to go for perfection anyway. Instead of stressing about the imperfections, I am concentrating on getting them finished and shined up well for her table. I also added smaller pieces of mirror along the areas that bothered me on the first 2 filling in a little more space for the grout to stick to, with the next 2 trays. I like how they looked when I grouted them yesterday. I have 4 more to do plus find something new to wear for the wedding soon. Somehow, over the past few years, all of my “dress” clothes have grout, odd colors of paint here and there, adhesives and primer on them. ;)

In other news, I’ll be working on a post on the other blog this weekend. It is likely that the post itself won’t be published until next week around this time. I spend a lot of time tweaking those, changing my thoughts and my mind often. I’ve been having some fairly good “aha” moments and as always, love to share them when I do. I don’t update that blog daily or weekly. Just whenever I feel the pull to share something I’ve discovered about my life along the way. If you want to follow my personal journey into enlightenment, you can find it here: http://theviewfromearth-earthmothermosaics.blogspot.com/

I hope you enjoy the rest of your week. Make it creative!

Stay peaceful.
